Your host :
Aldude in Basque, meaning "way to the heights", is a small village located on the borders of the Province of Lower Navarre, in a Spanish enclave where my gîte, Sarahandia, is located, an old Lower Navarrese farmhouse.
Sarahandia contraction of Zaroi handi means "big hut". In the 18th century, the cadets of the farms of Baigorri went up the valley to build more modest houses than their elders living in Baigorri "the etxe" the house (building and land) is indivisible, and according to the Basque tradition, the eldest girl or boy inherits the set. It is always current to designate a person by giving his first name and the house name of his birth.
A door lintel from Sarahandia bears the date of 1836. My great-grandfather Pierre INDA, bought "after having made his fortune in America" the rural property Sarahandia,
in 1910. My grandfather Michel the eldest of the siblings inherited, then his son, my uncle Albert still the eldest. This one had also been in America to try to remedy a rurality in great recession resulting from the 2nd world war. The village was depopulated, the attraction of the city becoming insistent. Back from America, my uncle modernized the farm, but remained single. For once the transmission could not be done in the purest tradition. He chooses me to inherit this property. He died prematurely in 2002 leaving the farm in full operation. For me, this heritage was complicated, you can't improvise yourself as a farmer!
Thus germinated in my family cocoon, the idea of making the residence a rural lodging, the grounds being already given in tenancy. This house had to live and the memories we had there last. For more than two years, we have devoted a lot of time and work there to renovate and above all to bring comfort while preserving what made the soul of the house: the red stones, the old beams, the identical fireplace. and furniture. Then little by little over time, listening to the suggestions made by our visitors, improvements are made, which make it a spacious, friendly and welcoming place.
The bet was risky but in total adequacy with the dynamic instilled in the valley by the rebirth of the “Basque pork” thanks to Pierre Oteiza developing a number of initiatives.
The goal I was looking for in creating this comfortable cottage was to "recharge" my guests by making them appreciate its privileged setting, its natives and their know-how, its enduring traditions and the desire I had to share with you this which is also part of my story.
